He Long: We Officers and Soldiers Should Share the Salt Together

When He Long led the army, he always insisted on the equal treatment between the military and the people, between officers and soldiers, and always loved the soldiers as his children. He said, “If you want soldiers to listen to you, you must love them.”

In the winter of 1928, He Long led a division of Second Front Red Army to the towering and steep mountains on the Hunan-Hubei border area. It was freezing and snowy, and the cold wind penetrates their bones. He Long, same with the soldiers, dressing in a single coat and wearing a pair of straw sandals, could not eat a grain of salt or have a mouthful of gruel for a few days. Once, the cook managedto get a small quantity of salt as much as fingertips. Then he specially cooked a bowl of chili peppers with salt for He Long. He Long tasted it and knew that it was specially made for him by the cook, so he poured the bowl of chili into the communal pot. When the cook came forward to stop him, He Long said with a smile, “We officers and soldiers are equal, and we should share the salt together!”

During the Long March in 1935, He Long followed the Red Army across the grasslands of Western Sichuan, and the food supply was almost cut off. Hunger, coldness, lack of oxygen, coupled with the bad weather of rain and snow, the soldiers were getting weaker and weaker. With the increasing number of the sick and the wounded, many comrades even died. He Long was stabbed to the heart by this situation. In order to pull through, he distributed all the stir-fried flour he had saved to the soldiers and gave the yak meat supported by other troops to the sick and the wounded. He Long also worked with the soldiers to dig wild vegetables, dig grass roots, catch fish, hunt frogs, scratch grasshoppers and so on. When it was hard to find even the roots of wild vegetables, he called on everyone to look for horse bones and cowhide left by the preceding troops, and personally taught the soldiers to cook belts and leather shoes. In order to catch fish, He Long personally made a fishing rod. Almost none of the fishing rod missed its mark. When he returned to headquarters without eating anything, He Long deliberately bulged his belly as if he was full. He said, “With this fishing rod, I won't be hungry!” Then he gave all the fish he had caught to the soldiers.
